Strategy for Healthy Homes

Surgeon General and HUD’s new strategy for healthier homes

Since we began selling air purifiers online in 1996, ClearFlite has educated the public about the poor quality of indoor air.  There has always been support from the EPA but now the federal government has unveiled a national strategy to promote healthier indoor air.  The dramatic rise in asthma among children under five in our country has become simply unacceptable.  The Surgeon General and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) have issued a national “call to action” and created a strong program to combat diseases like asthma which are related to indoor air.

HUD’s department of Healthy Homes has several lofty goals in its call to action program, but essentially it is to stress comprehensive healthy home principles.  As we have always said at ClearFlite Air Purifiers, having a room air purifier is part of the solution, but there are many others.  Here’s what HUD outlines as critical for a healthy home environment:

  • Check gas appliances, fireplaces and chimneys. Change furnace and air conditioning filters regularly. (ClearFlite suggests twice a year depending on your system).
  • Keep children safer from drowning, lead poisoning, suffocation, and other such hazards.
  • Improve air quality in the home by installing radon and carbon monoxide detectors (no air purifier can entirely remove these).
  • Eliminate all exposure to smoke - first and second hand.
  • Control allergens that contribute to asthma and mold growth (here’s where quality air purifiers make a significant contribution to home health).
  • Improve water quality by learning to protect and maintain private water wells.

Other federal organizations like the Centers for Disease Control are part of this major call to action.  Change will happen when federal agencies and private companies like ClearFlite Air Purifiers band together to educate the public with facts. We have tried to explain the issues around indoor air purification in as simple terms as possible on our site and to organize the wealth of information available in a format that is not so overwhelming.

Our air purifier specialists will also be happy to talk with you, whether or not you are considering an air purifier purchase.
