What happens if you don't replace your filters?
We have received some comical calls over the years about filter replacement. People have called in a panic realizing their filter change is one, two, three, (and one time, eight!) years past due and they need a new filter sent overnight!
If air purifiers with washable filters really worked well, we would sell them by the thousands at www.airpurifiers.com . We have carried some from time to time, but our customers, who tend to have significant allergy, asthma, and chemical problems, need products that are proven, so we stick with the technologies that work. Simply put, it's important to mark your calendar and change or at least check your filters according to the manufacturer's instructions. Some of the brands we carry have filter monitors, and some do not. The monitors do make knowing when to replace filters easier, but they aren't absolutely necessary, and units without them tend to be less expensive. If you know yourself well, and know you'll procrastinate on changing the filters, get one with monitors!
If a HEPA filter gets filled up, and the air purifier continues to run, the filter stops accepting new particulate and the air purifier simply uses electricity but does not provide clean air. If the activated carbon filter has adsorbed all it can hold, chemicals, gases and odors will stay in the room. The air purifier becomes an inert object.
