CADR of Home Air Purifier Products- Information from the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers

With so many different types of air purifiers on the market today, it's a good thing that there are different ways of measuring the effectiveness of each unit. Consumers can easily become confused and make purchasing an air purifier for their residence a guessing game. Thanks to the accurateness of the Clean Air Delivery Rate, or CADR, consumers have a statistic to compare different units with. The Clean Air Delivery Rate can help consumers to choose the best home air purifier for their specific situation. With the information that is put on the CADR seal, consumers are given detailed information on the air cleaner and its effectiveness. The CADR seal guarantees that the measurements and statistics that are on the box are correct and have been tested accurately and fully.
CADR of Home Air Purifier
The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, or AHAM, is the organization that tests and measures the numbers that are put on the CADR seal. The AHAM seal that is put on the box of an air cleaner lists 3 CADR numbers. One CADR number represents tobacco smoke, one represents pollen and one represents dust. The number tells the consumer the volume of air that is filtered by the unit when it is cleaning each of the contaminants from the indoor air. If the CADR for tobacco smoke, pollen or dust is a high number, the air purifier is able to remove this contaminant from the air in a quick manner.

In order to assist consumers in reading these numbers, the AHAM has produced a guideline that they called the “2/3 Rule”. When a consumer is considering a CADR for tobacco smoke, he or she should keep the “2/3 Rule” in mind. The home air purifier unit that a consumer chooses should always be able to clean at least 2/3 of the room's area when it comes to tobacco smoke. An example of how the “2/3 Rule” would come into effect is with a consumer that has a 120 square foot room. In order to follow the “2/3 Rule”, he or she should be sure that the CADR number for tobacco smoke on the home air purifier is at least 80. If the room size is smaller or the CADR is higher than is required by the “2/3 Rule”, the air cleaner would be able to clean the indoor air faster and more often. However, such a powerful or large air purifier may not be required for a room with a smaller size and the consumer could easily consider a smaller or less powerful unit. All CADR's that are measured and printed on the AHAM seal assume that the consumer will have 8-foot high ceilings. If a consumer has higher ceilings, he or she should keep in mind that the CADR's that have been calculated for the home air purifier might not be accurate in the room. The consumer should try to recalculate the CADR's in order to compensate for the extra square footage in the room due to the higher ceiling. It would be a good idea for the consumer to aim for an air cleaner that is able to handle a room of a larger square footage and is more powerful.

Tobacco smoke, pollen and dust are three of the most common and most irritating contaminants that can be found in indoor air. This is why these three types of particles were used when measuring the Clean Air Delivery Rates for air purifiers. With the help of the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturer's seal, consumers are finding the search for the correct home air purifier is a lot easier. With the help of the AHAM, the CADR's and other measurements that are printed on each seal are accurate and well tested. Before the test results are printed, they are confirmed and concluded. This makes consumers feel a lot more secure about trusting the numbers that are printed on the box. There are some manufacturers that may have inaccurate ways of testing their products and may try to persuade consumers to believe the statistics they have come up with. With the help of the AHAM, consumers now know which statistics they can trust and which statistics have yet to be proven. The CADR's can help a consumer to head in the right direction when trying to choose a home air purifier.
