The Importance of
CADR in Home Air Purifiers
With the help of the Association of Home
Appliance Manufacturer's seal on some air purifier units, consumers are finding
shopping for home air purifiers an easy task to handle. There are so many
different types of technologies and sizes of air cleaners that shopping around
for the right unit can seem like a daunting task for many consumers. There are
also many statistics and measurements done by manufacturers that may not always
be accurate or true. Consumers would always need to worry about the information
they were reading on the box or given by the company. Now that the AHAM has
certified many units with an AHAM seal, consumers are finding it easier to sort
through the true and false information that is given by the companies. The
CADR's are numbers given by the AHAM that have been accurately tested and can
help consumers to determine the effectiveness of an air cleaner.
According to the AHAM, about 50% of consumers have left the store after shopping
around for an air cleaner very confused and reluctant. However, since the AHAM
has introduced the Clean Air Delivery Rate, or CADR, program, many consumers are
now able to make a decision without hesitation. There are many different types
of technologies that are used in home air purifiers and many different levels
that they are able to clean on which can make the shopping and comparison
process a very tricky task for consumers. With the AHAM seal, consumers only
need to know what size of room it is that they are looking to clean and the rest
can be left up to the CADR ratings.

The Clean Air Delivery Rate, or CADR, on a box can tell a consumer how efficient
air purifiers are at removing a certain contaminant from the indoors. The three
pollutants that are measured are pollen, smoke and dust. These three pollutants
are the most common ones found in the home's indoor air. By comparing the CADR
numbers of each air cleaner, a consumer is able to determine which unit would be
the most effective for the room he or she is concentrating on. The CADR tells
how effective the air purifier will be at removing the pollutant from the room.
With the help of the AHAM seal, consumers can concentrate on how the air
purifiers will perform in a real-life setting inside their home. The consumer
does not have to examine and compare which type of technology or filtering
system he or she may need but only how effective the air cleaner may be
according to the CADR's.
By separating the three contaminants and making three different CADR's for each
pollutant, the AHAM has helped consumers to make the decision between home air
purifiers. If one air purifier has a high pollen rating, a consumer who may have
pollen allergies will be more prone to choosing that purifier for his or her
home. A home air cleaner may have a high CADR when it comes to tobacco smoke so
a homeowner that lives with residents who smoke cigarettes inside may choose
that air purifier for his or her needs.
The room size rating that is calculated by the AHAM and is printed on the seal
is also helpful for consumers when choosing home air purifiers. The room size
rating that is given to each air purifier is based on the ability for it to
remove 80% of smoke particles in a room. The rate assumes that the air moves
through the room with one air change per hour and complete mixing inside the
room.
With the help of the AHAM seal, consumers are finding the purchase of home air
purifiers to be an easier task. The seal gives important and accurate
information such as the CADR's of the product. The CADR's are helpful for
consumers so that they can have an understanding of how efficient the unit is at
removing common contaminants. Since the arrival of the AHAM seal and CADR's on
air cleaner products, consumers are able to make decisions on which air purifier
would fit for his or her situation. With the effectiveness of an air purifier
printed directly on the side of the box, consumers can't go wrong when choosing
an air cleaner.
