Home Air Purifiers Selection

There are many different types of air filters used in home air purifiers. Each type of filtering system has its own benefits and drawbacks in the home. The type of air purifier that a homeowner chooses for his or her own home depends on the situation that the air cleaner will be used for and what type of sensitivities he or she needs to look out for. Expert 1 is an organization that has put together the research that is based around different types of air purifiers. The Expert 1's goal is to equip consumers with a base of knowledge about the benefits and drawbacks of different types of filtering systems used in air cleaners. With this knowledge present for consumers, the decision on what type of air purifier to purchase for their home is made easier.

Some of the different types of filtering systems that are used in air cleaners include mechanical filters, electronic air purifying systems, hybrid filters and gas phase filter media. Most of these systems are effective in removing particles and harmful toxins from the indoor air. There are some types of filtering technologies that are used in home air purifiers that operate by using a chemical process called ozonation. The removal of the particles from the air is what is measured when the efficiency rate is trying to be achieved. The fraction of particles that is removed from the indoor air being measured is what determines the amount of efficiency an air purifier possesses.

A mechanical filter's efficiency is determined by the particle size of the particles being absorbed. Most mechanical filters that are deemed to be efficient are able to absorb particles inside indoor air that are 0.03 microns or larger in size. Mechanical filters generally use a fan to keep the air moving through the unit. They usually contain a pre-filter to absorb larger particles and another type of filter medium that the air passes through to absorb other smaller particles in the air. Mechanical filtering systems can be equipped with flat filters, pleated filters or HEPA filters. Flat filters generally have a packed and fibrous type of media while pleated filters use small and dense fibers for their make-up. HEPA filters are a dry type of filter that are regulated to absorb 99.7% of all particles in the air that are 0.03 microns and larger.

Electronic air purifiers are air purifiers that use electrostatic technology to absorb and eliminate particles in the air. These types of systems are able to give the particles found in the air a charge that sticks to the collection plates inside the air purifier, which are equipped with an opposite charge. The efficiency of different electronic air purifiers mainly depends on the size of their collection plates, strength of the electrical charging field and the airflow rate that the air purifier can achieve.

Hybrid air purifier fuses both of these types of filtering systems together into one system. Hybrid air purifiers contain a type of filter media as well as the ability to charge the particles in the air and collect them in charged collection plates. The filters inside the hybrid air purifier will need to be replaced just like a mechanical filtering system. The efficiency of the hybrid air purifiers is great because they are able to handle a lot of airflow and is able to eliminate many particles from the indoor air.

Gas phase filter media is generally added to an already existing filtering system inside an air purifier to assist it in removing gases and odors from the indoor air. There are many benefits to having gas phase media present inside an air purifier. They are efficient and specifically designed to remove vapors and unpleasant odors from the air. However, when gas phase media is used by itself, there are many drawbacks and it is not as efficient at removing harmful particles from the air. With the assistance of the Expert 1's research, consumers are now able to compare the benefits and drawbacks of different types of filtering systems used in air purifiers. The efficiency of each system is defined by the Expert 1's documents and research findings.
