It's Spring Cleaning Time - Should We "Air Out" the House?

If you're a spring cleaner and learned from your mother that it's important to open up all the doors and windows to air out the house - don't! You don't have to tell Mom, but an old fashioned "airing out" is like inviting the pollens, molds, and other outdoor allergens into your house for an allergy party. Spring cleaning may be good and necessary but you're better off if you run your HEPA air purifiers on high during and after the cleaning, and make sure your filters have enough room left to hold all the stuff you've stirred up. It is okay and good to shake rugs and blankets outside, just make sure the door you came out of is closed so that it doesn't all float back inside. A hot water washing after the shaking is helpful too.

Why Are More People Having Allergy Symptoms For the First Time?

ClearFlite has been selling air purifiers online since 1996 and we've noticed a marked increase in one particular comment in recent years. More and more customers are saying that they've never had allergy problems in their lives, yet suddenly they are. What's going on?

Although this increase is good for our business, we're concerned like many of you, that an earth in environmental trouble may be part of the cause. Allergies are much more common now, with 30-40% of the U.S. population having some form of allergy. Some experts think the rise is due to a combination of air pollution and fewer germs. Fewer germs? Yes, improved hygiene in the general population and the significantly increased use of antibiotics and antimicrobial soaps have reduced germs. It's the human immune system's job to attack something and in the past it primarily attacked germs, but if there are fewer germs the immune system will set its sites on pollen. So ironically, your sneezing, coughing, itching, and watering may be happening because your immune system is waging a war against something that it should be ignoring such as cat dander and tree pollen. With air pollution and mixed up immune systems, millions more are suffering in adulthood who never had allergy problems as a child.

New Study on Childhood Asthma Shows Home-Based Intervention is Effective in 2 Ways

A large study funded by The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has found that home intervention is both effective in the treatment of asthmatic children and in lowering the cost of their health care. The home-based program targeted six major classes of allergens - dust mites, cockroaches, pet dander, rodents, passive smoking, and mold. Those enrolled in the study received specific measures for reducing or eliminating these (pillow covers, HEPA air purifiers and vacuums, professional pest control, etc). According to information published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology the study showed significant improvement in the health status of the asthmatic children studied and a decrease in the number of unscheduled clinic visits.
