In the Austin Air HealthMate series of air purifiers the flow is brought into the system though the entire perforated periphery of the system. This approach provides a massive filter area and reduces restrictions and noise.
The flow then passes through the pre filter to remove large particles such as dust and hair, and on to the activated carbon-zeolite mix. The media mix removes chemical and odors from the flow and further mechanically filters the flow prior to arriving at the HEPA filter. The HEPA filter is a pleated paper system that removes 99.97% of all particulates larger than 0.3 microns in size.
The clean flow then passes the motor and fan where it is directed back into the room.
