Cleaning Friedrich C90B Air
Purifiers
Take precautions when cleaning Friedrich C90B air purifiers. As with any
electrical system, an air purifier can become dirty and not work as well as it did
when it was brand new. This is why you must clean the system. This system has an
electronic cell that has collector plates. These plates are what catch the
harmful particles that are in the air and they can become tremendously dirty.
The pre filter can also become exceedingly grimy as well. When both, the
collector plates and the pre filter are filthy, this compromises the efficiency
of the air purifier. Also be aware of the ionizing wire; dirt tends to build up
on them and make the charging process less effective.
In order to keep your new air purifiers working to its maximum performance, they
must be cleaned on a regular basis. This all depends on how much you actually
use the system in order to know exactly how often you should clean it. If it is
used on a daily basis, it should be cleaned more frequently than if it is used
every now and again.
You must first turn off the system and unplug it before proceeding with cleaning
the electronic cell and the pre filter. Pay close attention and be very careful
when you are handling the electronic cell. It has very sharp edges and wire that
can easily give you a nasty cut. Also extreme care should be taken when cleaning
the electronic cell due to the extremely hot water and the harmful effects that
detergents can have on your hands.
The easiest method to cleaning the electronic cell is to place the piece in an
automatic dishwasher. The dishwasher can provide the right amount of water
temperature, the use of detergents, a rinse; dry the system without harming your
skin with detergents and extreme temperatures. After you turn off the air
purifiers, remove the electronic cell and place it into your dishwasher. Make
certain that the measurements of your dishwasher can hold the electronic cell
and all parts of the dishwasher can move freely. The dimensions of the
electronic cell are 16 inches high, 12.5 inches wide and 4.5 inches deep. Be
sure that the air flow arrows are facing up. When you place the electronic cell
onto the rack, be very careful not to damage the ionizing wires or bend the
collector plates. This will cause the system not to work efficiently.
You can use your regular dishwasher detergent as you would if you had a load of
dishes in it. When the dishwasher has ran its cycle, and you are ready to remove
the system from the rack, take special care not to damage it. The cell may be
extremely hot so you should either let it cool or wear protective gloves when
lifting it up off the dish rack. Lift the electronic cell straight up so that
you can prevent damaging the wires and the collector plates.
An alternative way to clean the electronic cell if you do not have a dishwasher
is to mix one gallon of hot water with 4 ounces of an alkaline detergent. The
water temperature should be 150 F to 170 F. You should wear protective gloves so
that you will not get burned by the water as well as get your skin irritated by
the detergent. Soak the electronic cell in the mixed solution for about 15
minutes. Every two or three minutes you should agitate the liquid by either
sloshing or stirring it. Be careful not to splash it up into your eyes. Then
remove the electronic cell from the solution and place in clean water with
temperatures of 150 F to 170 F to rinse it off completely. Let it set for about
10 minutes before removing it. Once you remove it from the rinse water, let it
drain and dry completely before reinstalling into the system. If there is any
solution residue left on the electronic cell be sure to rinse it thoroughly
again. To clean the ionizer wires, simply take a damp cotton ball and wipe
the ionizer wires removing all of the dust and grime.
When inserting the electronic cell back into the Friedrich C90B, be certain that it is
completely dry. Placing it in the system if it is still damp may cause indicator
light to not come on until the electronic cell is completely dry. This normally
takes about two hours. If the electronic cell is place in the system and is
energized, snapping sounds may occur. In this case you should remove the
electronic cell and allow it to completely dry.
Sometimes after the electronic cell has been cleaned it becomes discolored. It
may have stains that are black or very dark. This is more likely to be detergent
residue and should be rinsed immediately. Yellow stains on the electronic cell
are probably from tobacco smoke or other types of smoke. The yellow staining
does not affect the system in any way. To remove tobacco stains, use ammonia based
or butyl based detergent. This will remove any smoke residue from the collector
plates.
When you reinstall the collector plates, be sure to check for any broken ionizer
wires or any bent collector plates. This can cause the system to not work properly
and should be returned to the authorized warranty station to have the wires
replaces. If you discover that the collector plates are bent, there is a simple
solution in fixing it. Take a flat head screw driver or other flat object and
straighten them. Make sure that the collector plates are not touching. This will
cause arcing and the system will not operate correctly.
The electronic cell in the Friedrich C90B has a cell key which keeps it from being installed
incorrectly. If it seems to be stuck when you insert it or the access cover
doesn't fit on the system securely, be sure to check that it has been inserted
correctly. Do not force it, this can damage the electronic cell or the system
itself.
When you clean the pre filter you should shake out the accumulated dust and
lint. Using a brush is also very helpful in this feat. You may also try a vacuum
to collect all the particles. If you prefer you can choose to use an all purpose
cleaner and wash out all of the tobacco smoke and grease stains from the pre
filter. You must rinse it thoroughly and allow to completely dry before placing
back into the system.
The carbon filter can also be cleaned on occasion. You should use a stream of
air or a vacuum to remove the collected dirt from the filter. When the carbon
filter can no longer remove odors from the air, it is then time to replace it
with a brand new one. Cleaning it will not restore its capabilities of absorbing
chemical and odors from the air. To keep the filter working as it should, the
filter should be replaced every three to six months.
The Specifications of Friedrich C90B Air Purifiers
Friedrich C90B air purifiers are only intended for indoor use and at the normal
