Whirlpool Whispure
Air Purifiers for Bedrooms
The bedroom may be the place we find rest and respite from the world, but with
the sheets, blankets, comforters, pillows, rugs, drapes, upholstery, dirty
clothing, shoes, and used towels usually found there, the bedroom can also be a
wonderland for microscopic creatures. Dustmites in bedding, mold spores from
damp towels and moist clothes, pollens
brought in on shoes and clothing and
through open windows, all can make the bedroom less healthy than it should be.
There are many different air purifiers on the market which address these
problems, but not all air purifiers are suitable for the bedroom, especially a
smaller one. The Whirlpool Whispure is a model of HEPA air purifier which is
suited for the bedroom because of its design and quiet operation. True HEPA
(high energy particulate arresting) air cleaners are those that capture 99.97%
of particulate and allergens as small as 0.3 microns, which is what the
Whirlpool Whispure is rated to accomplish.
Small to medium sized bedrooms for purposes of this article would be those less
than 250 square feet. That might mean a rectangular room that is 12 feet wide
and 20 feet long, or a square room that is 15 feet wide by 15 feet long. In
rooms of this size, air purifiers that require placement in the middle of the
space, or several inches away from a wall, can be obtrusive. The Whirlpool
Whispure is designed to be placed directly against a wall, so it stays out of
the way.

The sound level of air purifiers is always a concern to buyers. Air purifiers
vary in sound level and even in pitch when the decibel ratings are the same.
Those with a lower pitch are always less annoying and more easily become
background noise. The Whirlpool Whispure does have a pleasing lower pitch even
on the high speed than some models. On the lowest of its three speeds, the
Whirlpool Whispure is extremely quiet, but even on the highest speed, the sound
is that of a low pitch fan blowing and is not uncomfortable. One way to live
comfortably with any kind of air cleaner is to run the unit on high during the
time when you’re away from home so that it thoroughly cleans the room, and to
run it on low or medium when you’re home or sleeping.
Many HEPA air purifiers come with an activated carbon or “charcoal” element
which is designed to adsorb odors and chemicals. The Whirlpool Whispure does
come with a prefilter made by 3M which is composed of charcoal and will adsorb
light odors for up to three months. The charcoal prefilter is easy to change.
The main filter, which is the HEPA filter will last about a year. Filter
indicator lights remind you when to change them. Although the Whispure is a good
bedroom unit for capturing the particulate and allergens that irritate people,
it does not have enough charcoal for people with more serious chemical
sensitivity. As far as inexpensive air purifiers go, the Whirlpool is
well made and a good value.
